Description

The Mediterranean Symposia on Marine Key Habitats and NIS will be organized as part of the implementation of the Action Plans adopted by the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention:

  • Action Plan for the Conservation of Marine Vegetation in the Mediterranean Sea, adopted in 1999.
  • Action plan for the conservation of coralligenous and other Mediterranean bio-concretions adopted in 2008 and updated in 2016.
  • Action Plan for the Conservation of Habitats and Species Associated with the Submarine Moutains, the Underwater Caves and Canyons, the Aphotic Hardlands and Chemo-Synthetic Phenomena in the Mediterranean Sea (Dark habitats Action Plan) adopted in 2013.
  • Action Plan on Introducing Species and Invasive Species adopted in 2003 and updated in 2016.

The The Mediterranean Symposia on Marine Key Habitats and NIS will also provide an opportunity to discuss best practices in the monitoring of key marine and non-native species and provide elements to further improve the Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Program. Mediterranean Sea and Coasts and Related Assessment Criteria (IMAP), derived from the Ecosystem Approach in the Mediterranean.

These Symposia therefore plan to bring together specialists from across the Mediterranean region to discuss the state of knowledge available on species, key formations in the Mediterranean and non-native species and to present the latest developments in their conservation, the results of research and their impacts on marine and coastal biodiversity. Multi-stakeholder roundtables with the objective of generating a constructive exchange of information and expertise on the conservation of key marine habitats and the best strategies for dealing with non-native species will also be organized.

In terms of content, the symposiums will focus on the following main themes:

- Marine vegetation, coralligenous and other bio-concretions

  • Population, biology, ecology and dynamics (including species inventory)
  • Mapping and monitoring (and associated organizations)
  • Impacts and nuisances threatening key formations of the Mediterranean (including global changes)
  • Conservation, management and restoration.

- Dark Habitats

  • State of knowledge
  • Study methods
  • Management

- Non-native species

  • State of knowledge
  • Impacts on biodiversity
  • Control and management

The symposiums will include:

  • Oral communication sessions (for articles)
  • Poster sessions - Round tables / workshops
  • Training for students

The detailed program of the symposiums will be prepared according to the number of oral communications and posters accepted and will be available at the end of October / November 2018.
